Servings 8 Whole French Toast

Ingredients

  • 8 sliced bread preferably brioche or challah
  • 6 eggs, large
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  • Slice your bread into your desired thickness, 3/4” - 1” is best.
  • In a large dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until fully combined.
  • Take a slice of bread and dip it into the egg mixture, making sure to coat both sides evenly. Let the mixture soak in the mixture for about 10-15 seconds per side.
  • In a medium-heat nonstick skillet or griddle, melt a tbsp of butter. Place soaked bread in pan, cook for about 3-5 min, or until golden brown. Then flip it over and cook the other side until golden brown.
  • Repeat the process with the remaining bread and egg mixture.
  • Once all the bread slices are cooked, sprinkle some powdered sugar over them and serve with whipped cream and maple syrup.

Notes

Use thick slices of bread: For the best texture and flavor, use thick slices of bread like brioche or challah. The bread should be at least 1 inch thick so that it can soak up the egg mixture and hold its shape when cooked.
Soak the bread well: Make sure to soak the bread slices in the egg mixture for at least 20-30 seconds on each side, or until they are fully saturated. It also helps if the bread is a bit stale.
Don't overcrowd the pan: Overcrowding the pan can cause the bread to steam instead of fry, resulting in a soggy texture.
Use low-medium heat: Cooking the french toast on low-medium heat will help the bread to cook evenly without burning. If the heat is too high, the bread may cook too quickly on the outside and remain uncooked on the inside.
Let the french toast rest before serving: After cooking, let the chocolate chip french toast rest for a minute or two before serving. This will help the custard to set and make it easier to cut and serve.
